I’ve been wanting to try Birchbox for some time now, so I was really excited when my first box arrived last month after the winner of my Glossybox/Birchbox showdown and giveaway chose Birchbox as her favorite.
The box was sooo tiny! I didn’t think the box would fit in our mailbox, but I think you could’ve fit 6 of them in our mailbox. For a size comparison, the box was about half the size of a standard magazine. Tiny!
When I opened the box, it was artfully packed full of goodies. I was really impressed with how much was crammed into the tiny box (with room to spare!). The person who is in charge of packing the boxes at Birchbox should teach lessons on suitcase-packing for space optimization. Seriously, I’d sign up.
The box came with a little postcard thanking me for my purchase and explaining the contents of the box.
The first item from my box was this Serge Normant Meta Revive Volumizing Dry Shampoo. I love dry shampoo and use it regularly, so I already have tried and true favorites. Nevertheless, I tried this one right away. It is a lot thicker than the cheaper version that I use, so it gave my hair more a lot more volume that I am used to. It worked really well at refreshing my roots and allowed me to extend blowout another day. However, it was nearly impossible to rub in and brush out. It definitely works so far as dry shampoo goes, but I really prefer Batiste or Suave because they are cheaper, smell better, work just as well, and blend in much easier.
Next, I got a nice travel-size sample of whish shave cream. I haven’t tried this yet, because I think it’s something that might be good to save until the next time I travel.
Next was this super cute floral nail file by Madewell. It’s really pretty, and I was just thinking to myself a few days before that I needed to go get some emery boards to keep around the house. This was my favorite thing in the box.
Next, I got a some Incoco nail polish strips. I love nail polish strips. NO dry time, easy to apply, and they look so much better than when I paint my nails myself since I have the nail-painting ability of a toddler. I haven’t tried these yet either, because I have a tendency to hoard nail strips until I have somewhere to go and no time to paint my nails and let them dry adequately(vacation, bridal/baby shower, holidays, etc.). These are a bright turquoise color, so I think I’ll save them until summer.
Lastly, I got three small packets of Caldrea body lotion in various scents. I’m really weird about lotion because I hate having to let it dry before getting dressed, especially when it’s so cold that I feel like I’m freezing to death when I get out of the shower. However, these weren’t oily feeling at all, and they seemed to dry pretty quickly. My favorite was the aloe water apricot.
Overall, I was a little disappointed. I really thought that Birchboxes were tailored to each person’s interests/likes. I was so excited before my box came in the mail because I was seeing posts all over Twitter and Facebook about how everyone was getting samples of Benefit Benetint and Macadamia Healing Oil Treatment, two product I adore and was hoping to get. Yet, I ended up with lotion, dry shampoo and shaving cream. Not the most exciting products when I was really hoping to try out some new makeup products (or old favorites). Needless to say, I didn’t renew my subscription, but I think I may have jumped the gun. I wish I hadn’t acted so quickly, because I think maybe I just got a disappointing month. I would’ve liked to have tried a couple more boxes before cancelling, but in my impossible-to-blend-dry-shampoo-induced rage, I cancelled.
Maybe I’ll try it again later this summer, or maybe I’ll go for the Glossybox. Not sure yet. Have any of you tried Birchbox? Or Glossybox? How did you like it/them?
