This past weekend was the city-wide garage sale weekend, so Cory and I took full advantage of the opportunity to get rid of some of our old, mismatched furniture and dishes from our college days. Since downsizing my wardrobe is on my 26×26 list, I begrudgingly combed my closets for pieces of clothing and accessories to sell as well. What I found were a whole bunch of cheap pieces of clothing that I bought in college/law school, probably just for the sake of buying or because I needed retail therapy, or because money literally burns a whole in my pocket…who knows? The sad thing is that most of these pieces still had tags on them and/or were pieces that do not come close to conforming with my sense of style anymore.
Needless to say, I sold quite a bit of clothing and the remainder will go to Goodwill or the consignment shop. This event further solidified my new shopping philosophy: Invest in classic, well-made pieces that I’ll love and wear forever instead of buying a bunch of cheap crap in bulk just because it’s cheap and I can afford to buy it in bulk.
With that being said, here are some of the investment pieces I’d like to add to my wardrobe:
I’m absolutely loving the skater skirt/fluted skirt trend this season. This J.Crew skirt (and everything else at jcrew.com) is 25% off with code SHOPFALL.
I tend to shy away from crazy prints, but Clover Canyon is the exception. Their fun prints have stolen my heart, and, according to Jean, their dresses are made to fit like a glove and flatter a woman’s body.
If you follow on Twitter, you know that I’ve been on the hunt for a Rebecca Minkoff Mini M.A.C. The problem is that I am incredibly indecisive and can’t choose a color. I want a color that will transition nicely between seasons- something that will be fun during the spring and summer but won’t compete with brighter colors that I like to wear in warmer weather, something that will mesh with the rich, bold hues of fall that I love so much, and something that will provide a bit of interest to the eventually tiresome jeans-and-sweaters wardrobe of winter. I think this blue color fits the bill. The color is rich and luxurious without being too loud or overwhelming, but would work with both neutrals and brights.
All of a sudden, I’ve become a big fan of the envelope clutch. They look so streamlined and clean, and I am always so surprised by how much stuff I’m able to cram in them! The emerald color of this Gigi New York clutch is perfect for fall and beyond- it’s one of my favorite colors. This clutch would be an effortless way to elevate an everyday outfit into a chic and polished look.
Also, I’m kind of in love with the Forzieri website (see the Rebecca Minkoff link). It’s somewhat new to me, but they have an incredible selection of luxury and contemporary designer items….not to mention they are having a huge end-of-summer sale right now: up to 70% off!
Now I’m off to the craft store and a little nearby farm to stock up on pumpkins and other fall décor. Have a great day!
