This week, I got the opportunity to go to my local tanning salon and try out a VersaSpa spray tanning booth. I had a bad spray tanning experience in high school, so I was a little nervous, but also excited to see how much the technology has improved since I was a teenager. Lucky for me, this spray tan was much better. It actually surpassed all of my expectations, and I’m already planning my next one.
A look inside the VersaSpa machine- the sprayers/dryers
If you’ve never gotten a spray tan before, I can assure you it is a nice, pampering and relaxing treatment. You go into a little room by yourself, take off whatever clothes you don’t want to get stained with tanner (you could wear an old bandeau bathing suit if you want), then you apply some barrier cream (aka lotion) to the driest parts of your skin- hands/wrists, elbows, knees, feet/ankles. Then you put on a hairnet to protect your hair from unwanted color. Then you step into the machine and place your thumb over the green “start” sensor. The machine will talk to you and tell you which way to turn. There should be a picture on the wall that shows you the poses you should strike to get an all-over glow. Then the machine dries you off and you’re good to go! They told me at the salon to wait at least 4 hours to bathe, and that the color would fully develop in 6-8 hours. According to the VersaSpa website, the longer you wait to bathe, the longer the tan will last. I let the tanning solution soak in overnight, then washed it off the next day. I was left with a beautiful, natural-looking tan. No orange, no streaking, no uneven color- I love it! I was told the tan would last up to 7-10 days. I’m just on day two right now, so it still looks great. I’ve been moisturizing like crazy, so hopefully my tan will stick around for the whole week.
Immediately post-spray tan. I felt really tan right away, but I couldn’t believe how much the color darkened as it developed over the next few hours!
A few tips: Don’t put lotion on the bottoms of your feet or you will slip and slide all over the machine. Trust me. This should be common sense, but I did it anyway. Bad idea! Second, make sure to really rub the lotion into your fingernails and cuticles if your nails aren’t painted. I didn’t, and I have a tiny bit of staining on my cuticles/nails that definitely could have been prevented. Third, I highly recommend applying a thick layer of lip balm before you step into the machine. I didn’t, and my lips tasted awful, plus they got severely dry. Not sure if the tan is to blame for the dryness, but I’ll make sure to wear lip balm in the future. Make sure you shave/exfoliate the day before you tan. This will make for a nice canvas so the tanning solution will go on evenly.
I’ve partnered with Sunless, Inc. to give away a free spray tan to help one lucky Sugar and Chiffon reader get summer ready with a beautiful bronze glow. You can choose either a VersaSpa tan (the one I got) or a Mystic Tan, depending on which one is closest to you – both are available in locations nationwide.
