Today, my friend and super talented makeup artist Kelsey Kruse is sharing all her secrets to keeping your face from melting off in this crazy hot weather! Read on for her tips:
Summer is the best time to try new trends! The bright lipstick you bought months ago but have been waiting to wear out, the gorgeous bronzer that’s perfect for your beach vacation, and that sparkly eyeshadow that brings out your baby blues – you know you’re ready to switch up that makeup routine! But how do you beat the summer heat and keep it all looking fresh and fabulous? I have a few tips on how to control your glow throughout the season.
1. Prime, baby, prime! A primer is key for keeping your foundation on all day in the humidity. Our faces have different dry and oily areas all over; a primer helps to smooth it all out, as well as keep foundation from sinking into pores. I LOVE Benefit’s POREfessional. A little bit goes on a long way – just dab a pea-sized amount into areas where you have large pores to blur any imperfections. You can also smooth an all-over primer (like Too Faced’s Hangover Rx) over the entire face to perk up your skin and prepare it for foundation. Also, don’t forget to prime your eyes! Oily eyelids can make eyeshadow crease and slip around. My favorite is Benefit’s Stay Don’t Stray.
2. Try cream instead of powder. When you cry or sweat, powders can streak and run off your face! Try cream blushes and liquid foundations or tinted moisturizers for summer. You can always set it with a matching powder color to double-ensure the long wearability. Almay has self-adjusting foundations and cheek colors to adjust to any skin tone! (Katy edit: My favorite liquid foundation is this one, and I love these creams for highlighting/contouring.)
3. Set it and forget it. A light translucent powder like Laura Mercier’s Invisible Setting Powder works wonders. Don’t worry about “baking,” like you may have seen on YouTube.  Your beautiful skin doesn’t need all those layers. Just dust a little on with a fluffy brush to set any liquid foundation and help it to last throughout the day. Also, right before you walk out the door, mist yourself with some setting spray. My favorite is the Urban Decay All Nighter spray. You could literally fall asleep in your makeup (but don’t) and wake up with it still looking fresh the next morning if you use this stuff.
4. Waterproof when necessary. Waterproof products can sometimes be harsh on skin and difficult to remove at the end of the day. I like to use them only when I know I’ll be swimming or sweating, like at the lake or the gym. My favorite waterproof mascara is Urban Decay’s Cannonball. It not only stays put, but it really lengthens and conditions eyelashes! Also, the trend this summer is liquid lipstick. It applies like a gloss but covers like a lipstick and stains like a lip paint! It’s a miracle product! Try Dose of Colors in Coral Crush. My favorite summertime orange! (Katy edit: I also love this liquid lipstick and own it in multiple colors!) Lastly, Anastasia Beverly Hills makes a gorgeous brow pencil that will not budge, even if you happen to accidentally wipe sweat from your brow.
Remember – girls don’t sweat, they glisten! Try out these tips and tricks to keep your makeup on all day. Also, feel free to leave your favorite products in the comments! We love to try new things!
