Baby

14 Weeks

How big is baby? My app says baby is the size of a lemon, but last week it was the size of a peach. I feel like peaches are bigger than lemons so….baby is the size of a really large lemon?

Maternity clothes? Yes, but they are too big. I bought a bunch of these leggings with the full belly panel, but I could honestly wear them as a strapless jumpsuit if I wanted to. Due to the nausea, I can’t stand to have anything tight against my stomach, so normal pants are a no-go. Dresses, over-sized sweaters, and loose belly panel-leggings it is! It’s definitely not the most polished look, but you do what you have to do to deal with 24/7 “morning” sickness. See my favorites at the end of the post!

Sleep? Not great. I never knew I could feel this tired, but I seem to get a second wind every night right about bed time.

Best moment this week? The weekend! Cory and I spent all of Sunday at home, lounging and watching football and the SAG awards. Those are my favorite kind of days. We also figured out that you can order your groceries online at our grocery store, and then you just drive up and they load your car. SO AMAZING, especially since going food shopping is tough for me right now with the queasiness.

Miss anything? I really miss rosé.

Movement? Nope.

Food cravings? I have cried because I’ve been craving in-season, Georgia peaches so badly. Also, yogurt (which I found repulsive pre-pregnancy), chips and queso (which I have always loved), steak, and clementines.

Food aversions? Mayonnaise, turkey, some kinds of cheese. Chocolate has been iffy- some days I can’t stand the thought of it and some days it’s okay, but I still don’t like it like I used to.

Gender? Not sure yet. I can’t wait to find out!

Belly button in or out? In

Wedding rings on or off? On, but getting snug.

Mood? Mostly pretty good, but I’ll cry at the drop of a hat, or a slightly sappy commercial, or because I can’t get in-season, Georgia peaches. You know at the beginning of the SAG awards where a few actors talk about how they had always dreamed of becoming an actor and then they say “I’m [so and so], and I’m an actor”? I sobbed.

Any other symptoms? Mostly just fatigue, nausea and headaches. This and these have helped a lot, primarily with the nausea.

Looking forward to? The weekend! The Grammys are on Sunday, and I’m so exited to relax and watch all the red carpet coverage.

We’ve Got a Secret!

WE’RE HAVING A BABY!!!

And boy oh boy, was this a tough secret to keep! I think we knew for about 65 minutes before we told Cory’s parents…and we only made it that long because it was Thanksgiving and we wanted to wait until we got to their house so we could tell them in person. It’s just such an exciting thing that it’s hard not to tell the whole world!

We actually didn’t find out until I was already quite a few weeks along. I had been feeling sick for about a week- dizziness, nausea, just overall feeling gross. I thought for sure I just had a virus or something, but Cory said right away “I think you’re pregnant.” Sure enough!

Unfortunately, my symptoms only got worse. I have been sooo sick, y’all. It has been challenging- I’ve cried my fair share of times haha – but I’m also so grateful. We have several close friends and family members who have struggled with infertility, so I know we are so lucky to get to experience pregnancy.

Despite not feeling so well, I decided that I wanted to go ahead with our trip to Paris that we’d had planned since the summer. I had already booked a session with a photographer, so it actually worked out perfectly that we got to turn our “anniversary” photo shoot into a baby announcement shoot! I will say though, it was freezing cold, raining, and insanely windy we when took these photos…and I seriously felt like I was going to be sick at any second, so it was a small miracle that these photos turned out. Our photographer, Odrida from Kiss Me in Paris, was so sweet and easy to work with. I highly recommend her if you’re interested in hiring a photographer in Paris.

Baby Hanawalt is due in July, and we are just so excited. We can’t wait to find out in a few more weeks whether it’s a boy or a girl, but we are seriously struggling to come up with boy names we like, so send me all your suggestions! If it’s a girl, we will be in better shape- we have the name narrowed down to a few choices. My 3-year old nephew thinks we are having twin girls (no twins that we know of!), and he says we should name them Razzy and Bammy. So, I mean, how we can argue with that? 😉

I’m so excited to start planning and decorating a nursery and all the other fun stuff that comes along with this! It’s all so new to me, so it’s a little overwhelming, but in the best way possible, and I’m looking forward to sharing my experience with y’all!

Best After-Christmas Sale Items

If you’re like me, then your Christmas gift cards are burning a hole in your pocket and you are READY TO SHOP! Luckily for us, there are so many good after-Christmas sales going on right now. Here are some of the best after-Christmas sale items.

Faux Fur Slippers (only $14!!) // Becca Apres Ski Glow Face Palette // beautyblender 3-pack // Camel Tunic Sweater // OTK Boots // Copper Monogram Cocktail Shaker //  Bose Wireless Headphones

I just ordered the faux fur slippers, and I can’t wait for them to get here. I hate wearing socks, but my feet are always so cold in the winter. I picked out the cream pair, and they were $14 with free shipping. You can’t beat that!

The Becca Apres Ski Palette is seriously tempting me. I love the shades of the blushes and highlighters in the palette, and it has gotten so many good reviews. It’s on sale, and you get an extra 20% off with the code SALEONSALE.

I love my beautyblenders and think they are far superior to other makeup sponges out there, but I have a really hard time paying $20 for…a sponge. This 3-pack is on sale for $34, but you get an extra 20% off with code SALEONSALE, bringing the total down to $27.20. That makes each full-size beautyblender just a little over $9!

The tan sweater tunic is another item I just ordered. Lately I’ve been all about long sweaters and leggings (these leggings are one of my favorite pairs & all colors but black are also on sale!), and you can never go wrong with a camel sweater and black leggings.

The black over-the-knee boots are great, affordable alternative to the cult-favorite Stuart Weitzman boots (which are also on sale). I actually have both, but I find that this pair is a little stretchier than the SW pair, so it provides a better, more comfortable fit for those of us with wider calves/thighs. They also come in a really pretty brown color.

Can you ever go wrong with monogrammed pieces?! This monogrammed cocktail shaker would make a great belated gift or addition to a bar cart. We are redoing our kitchen in 2018, and we’re planning on doing white counter tops/back splash with copper accents, so this cocktail shaker would be perfect. Bonus: it’s cute enough to be left out on the counter as a decorative touch.

I have been looking at some nice, wireless, over-ear headphones for a while, and I’ve decided that this Bose pair is exactly what I want. My experience with Bose products has always been excellent, and I’ve read so many good things about these headphones. They would have been particularly nice on our flights to/from Paris, as I kept getting tangled up in the cord to my headphones…

Breaking the Silence

Hey, there. It’s been a long time. It’s been practically silent on Sugar and Chiffon this year, and I feel like I owe you an explanation.

Simply put, between the hurricanes, the earthquakes, the wildfires, the horrible sexual harassment/assault stories in the news, and the current president saying and doing horrible things, I started to feel like it was almost irreverent for me to keep blogging about mascara and espadrilles and chunky-knit sweaters. Which is ridiculous of course. I see that now.

While it is important that we, as a society, recognize injustices and fight for what we believe is right, it is also important to take time for self care. For a while there, I was kind of in the mindset that I couldn’t do fun things that I enjoyed, because it felt so wrong to be happily blogging about a fun sale or lipstick when I knew, at the same time, there were others experiencing so much suffering and fear. But I’ve come to the realization that it’s okay to take some time for yourself, to fend for you own happiness even in the face of turmoil. Because if we don’t, we will get burnt out. And if we all get burnt out, who will be left to recognize and fight against the injustices that made us feel this way in the first place?

I have felt so overwhelmed by the new lately. Every morning I wake up and read the notifications I get on my phone from various news apps (turning that function off asap!) and think, “2017, could you please just give us ONE DAY OF PEACE?!” In particular, I have been especially troubled by the news of Alabama’s U.S. senator candidate who has been accused of dating a 14-year old when he was in his thirties. As a former criminal defense attorney, I understand the importance of “innocent until proven guilty,” but I have found it so troubling to see people go on live television and indicate that either a) that behavior is fine and it’s the victims who are at fault, or b) that they would rather vote for an accused pedophile than someone of the other political party. For lack of a better phrase, I JUST CAN’T EVEN. This story last week was my breaking point.

Something has to change for the sake of my personal sanity and well-being. So this weekend I started turning to my old favorite blogs instead of the news, and I found so much relief. Fran taught me how to make a cheaper alternative to a Peloton bike, Corinne made me spend all my money, and Jess gave me some great outfit ideas for Thanksgiving.

The point of this post is multi-fold. First, if you’re feeling overwhelmed by the state of things in this country (or elsewhere!), you are not alone. Second, If you’re feeling overwhelmed by the state of things, it’s okay -even necessary- for you to take care of yourself. Do something you love, with someone you love. Go for a walk outside. Snuggle a puppy. Your emotional health and well-being is so important. You deserve to be happy! Taking care of your own health and well-being will put you in an even better position to help others. Lastly, I’m planning to start blogging again. I’m not really sure how often (five posts a week is so much work, y’all…and my life is not that exciting!), but I know that this space/community is something that makes me feel happy. It’s like a vacation from all the garbage going on in the world. Also, I have SO MUCH to tell y’all! We bought a new house and moved! We’re going to Paris! I have a giveaway post coming up soon that involves CHEESE! Going forward, the content is probably going to be a bit different than what it used to be. These days, I’m much more passionate about creating lifestyle-related content (i.e. recipes, home decor, travel, beauty, fashion, sales, etc.), rather than just outfit posts. Also, I don’t really love taking/posting outfit photos of myself, so there’s that… haha. But there will still be fashion-related content, you can be sure! If you have any suggestions about what you’d like to see, or questions you’d like answered, please reach out to me! Sugar and Chiffon is as much about you as it is me, and I want to make it a fun, relaxing getaway from all the awful stuff going on in the world because, in 2017, we need it.

Summer Entertaining

This is a sponsored conversation written by me on behalf of Dr Pepper®. The opinions and text are all mine.

One of my favorite things about the warmer weather is summer entertaining. Is it just me, or does life seem to settle down a bit during the summer months? Maybe it’s just that the days are longer, but I feel like Cory and I tend to spend more time with friends and family (and each other!) in the summer, enjoying the sunshine and good company.

We recently had a little party at our house to kick off summer. It was such a nice departure from our usual hectic schedule. Cory and I both stay quite busy, so this was a great way to reconnect with friends and family.

When it comes to summer entertaining, I’m a firm believer that the dishes served should be simple. Instead of spending all day in a hot kitchen, I recommend picking a few unfussy options to serve to your guests. Easy salads, fresh fruit and other quick no-cook dishes make great options and will be more refreshing on a hot day than a warm meal.

When we entertain at our house in the summer, there are a few staples that I always like to serve: a cheese plate, a dessert (usually something with chocolate), and lots of tasty drinks. Cold, juicy watermelon is another must have. I love watermelon!

Lately, my go-tos for a cheese board have been a nice, sharp white cheddar like Adam’s Reserve, Cotswold (Gloucester with chives), pretty much any bleu cheese, and Red Dragon with whole grain mustard. The Cotswold and Red Dragon can be kind of difficult to find around here, so we just went with cheddar, bleu and a smoky gouda.

As for tasty drinks, y’all know I’m a Diet Dr Pepper girl! I love my DDP! I’m not really sure why, but my family has always been a Diet Dr Pepper family. So, for me, Dr Pepper isn’t just delicious; it’s also nostalgic. It reminds me of good times spent with parts of my family that I only get to see a few times a year- we’re spread out between Ohio, Texas and Massachusetts!

Okay, but seriously, I could write a novel about how much I love Diet Dr Pepper…I’m pretty sure it’s 85% of the reason I survived law school. Ha! And while we’re on the subject, the next time you have a summer get-together, try using Dr Pepper in place of whatever other soda you use in mixed drinks. I promise you’ll be back here to thank me!

Dr Pepper and Walmart are running a fun promotion this summer to help you make the most of your summer. This can/bottle holder has a built in ice pack, which is super useful. I seriously wonder why we didn’t get one of these things sooner!

When you buy any Dr Pepper at Walmart this summer between 6/15 and 8/15, you can upload your Walmart receipt here to get the prize featured in my blog here and/or other prizes like:

  • Spend $5, get a unicorn beverage holder inflatable
  • Spend $10, get a Walmart e-Gift Card worth $5
  • Spend $20, get a 6 pack can/bottle holder with ice pack
  • Spend $40, get a Dr Pepper bottle shaped pool float

Once you get your super cool prize, make sure to share it on social media and use the hashtags #Walmart and #PickYourPepper. I’m particularly interested in seeing the unicorn drink holder inflatable! Also, make sure to look for the new Pick Your Pepper Dr Pepper packaging coming to Walmart stores on June 15th. The new Pick Your Pepper packaging was created by millennials, for millennials, so it’s definitely going to have a fun, unique twist on the traditional packaging.

February Favorites Featuring Aveda

My February favorites this month are pretty heavy in the beauty department, but I promise they are all really good.

Aveda Tulasara Wedding Masque c/o: This moisturizer is amazing. I’ll admit that I didn’t have super high expectations for it because I’m very picky about my moisturizers. But guys, when I woke up the morning after my first use and my skin was soft and glowing, I was sold. The cream is very thick. A tiny bit is all I need to cover my face and neck, so I see this little bottle lasting for a long time, even with daily use.

Lipstick Queen Color-Changing Lipstick in Hello Sailor: This navy blue lipstick looks super intimidating in the tube, but when you apply it to your lips, it turns into a perfect berry hue. The color is sheer but buildable, and the formula is so moisturizing that I’ve been using this as my daytime lip balm.

Chloe and Isabel Endless Pave Necklace and Bracelet c/o: This jewelry is so nice for everyday wear. I love the simple link design and the distressed gold look. The pave accents add just the right amount of sparkle. If you’re new to Chloe and Isabel jewelry, they offer a lifetime replacement guarantee. It obviously doesn’t cover normal wear and tear, but if a stone falls out or a clasp breaks, they’ll replace it for free or give you store credit. If you’re interested in C&I jewelry, I highly recommend shopping through my friend, Cha’. She’s very helpful and quick to respond. She’s also a med student!

Charlotte Tilbury Filmstar Bronze & Glow Face Sculpt and Highlight: This is, hands down, my favorite highlighting product ever. At the Nordstrom beauty event I attended last month, we all kept stealing it from one another…it seriously looks good on everyone.

Valentine’s Day Gift Ideas For Her

Valentine’s Day Candy Box c/o Candy Club

It’s no secret that I love subscription boxes, and one of my favorites, Candy Club, makes the perfect Valentine’s Day gift. They have a big selection of high-quality candies- chocolate, gummy, sour, etc.- and you can choose the ones you receive in each box. You can also send a gift subscription so your valentine can pick his/her own treats! Right now you can get $20 off your first box or you can get 3 free candies when you purchase a regular box (no codes necessary, just click the links). I just got a box full of the cutest Valentine’s Day themed candies, and I can’t wait to try them once I finish my Whole 30 (longest month of my life haha).

If you prefer to gift something that will last a little longer than the time it takes to devour a bunch of delicious candy, I’ve rounded up some of my favorite rose-hued things. The Dior Lip Glow is one of my favorite lip products. It’s a balm that reacts with your lips to enhance their natural color. I have the Nikes in gray, and they are the most comfortable pair of shoes I’ve ever owned. The marble watch and the Nars palette are in my online shopping cart tempting me to buy them (wink wink, Cory!), and how cute would this dress be for spring and summer weddings? I love it!

Cute Workout Clothes for the New Year

Up until the last two months or so, I was totally in denial that cute workout clothes were really that much of a necessity. When I went to the gym, I would wear baggy sweatpants and an old college t-shirt, or leggings and one of those giant t-shirts they hand out at sporting events. I was (and to some extent, still am) uncomfortable in the gym because I certainly don’t look like I belong there, so hiding under giant clothes was my way of trying to be invisible, I guess.

In August I started working out with a new trainer who always dresses in the coolest, trendiest workout clothes and has a sneaker collection that rivals my actual shoe collection. He’s also very muscley and intense, so imagine my surprise when we bonded over shoes of all things! The next thing I knew, he had convinced me to order rose gold Nikes. Then the craziest thing happened- that one pair of shoes had a transformative effect on me.  It sounds so silly, but when I wore those Nikes, I felt like a bad ass. Forget the gym- I felt like I belonged in a Nike catalog! Then I picked out another pair of Nikes I wanted for Christmas. Then I found these marble workout pants and knew I had to have them. I also got this coral and rose gold sweatshirt.

Now, I’m a firm believer that cute workout clothes will actually help motivate me to work out. Getting dressed is half the battle, right?
